For 50Hertz, a key driver of Germany’s energy transition, this project addressed a growing communication challenge: how to explain highly abstract, technical aspects of the power grid to a public that is increasingly skeptical of complex infrastructure and its costs. Topics like revenue caps, bottleneck management, and cost structures can feel distant and opaque, making trust and understanding difficult to build. To bridge this gap, the project adopted a friendly, colorful, and visually led design approach that stayed consistent with 50Hertz’s branding while making the subject matter more approachable and transparent.
Through a combination of animated explainer videos and social media content – also used in outreach with local communities in form of a small printed pamphlet – the project translated the journey of electricity from producer to consumer into clear, engaging stories. By simplifying complexity without losing accuracy, these materials helped audiences grasp why grid expansion is necessary and how targeted investments in sustainable infrastructure can lead to long-term price stability.

This animated explainer video for 50Hertz was created to help a wide audience understand the often invisible backbone of our daily lives – the electricity grid – in a clear and accessible way. By combining concise storytelling with brand-appropriate animations, the video translates complex topics such as revenue caps, cost structures and congestion management into engaging, easy-to-understand visuals. It illustrates how electricity travels from generators to consumers, why expanding the grid is essential, and how strategic investments can reduce costs in the long term. The use of clear, consistent animations not only reflects 50Hertz’s visual identity but also helps to demystify critical infrastructure and give the public a better understanding of the importance of a resilient and future-proof electricity grid.
